AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this research is to know about the coronation of the Oba of Benin and the religious implication to the society. This research will also aim at:

  1. Enlightening people on the processes of the Oba of Benin coronation.
  2. The impacts of the coronation on the Nigerian society
  3. To educate people on the coronation.
  4. To re-emphasize the values of the Edo culture and traditions.

This research work is written to preserve the history of the coronation of the Benin Oba.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Generally, scholars have written on the history of Benin kingdom, its rise and decline, economic and political nature of the Benin. They have also written and given the life history of the past Obas. It is also discovered that some historians noticed that some part of Benin kingdom has not being written about and they took it upon themselves to make a documentation of it.

This research work will dwell emphatically on the coronation process of the Benin Oba because little or no work has been documented about the processes or the importance of the coronation. This is due to the fact that the coronation of the Oba does not happen all the time. For example, the last coronation took place in 1979 (Coronation of Oba Erediauwa) before this present 2016  coronation of Oba Ewuare 11.

This research work will critically focus on the coronation process of the Benin Oba and also state the religious implication of the coronation.
